Summary:

Gene Hsu’s research focuses on ethnomusicology and translation & languages, which involves intercultural and interdisciplinary studies. She focused on literary and musical translation such as translating songs, musicals, films, literature and poetry.

Her independent project “Music and Translation” was awarded the CIOL certificate and qualification for its innovative nature and the high mark achieved. Her papers have been presented at research conferences globally. 

In the meantime, she also makes it practical -- In her academic research and vocal performances, Gene performs East Asian songs she translated or rewrote. It is relevant to the significance of traditional languages and culture, and to share good East Asian songs in the West through her research and singing performances, song translations, song writing.

Gene tries to help audiences and readers understand her research better through vocal performances which can showcase the significance of inter-lingual singable song lyric translations in reducing cultural and language barriers, enhancing mutual understanding and furthermore, peacebuilding among people and nations.

Gene also emphasizes the great importance of good traditional culture and languages in preserving original meanings of the languages and words, from aspects of history, moral integrity and culture, and gives suggestions of distinguishing the genuine traditional culture from the distorted one(s) in contemporary era.
